- How society is quick to form opinions and pass judgement on unfolding events. When the only information available is what is found on the internet
Why: Plausible reasons that determine the rational basis for my bug list
- Most big box retailers purchase items that are mass produced. Error can occur in mass production even though heavily monitored by computers. Such as a machine can malfunction and fail to insert all the proper parts
- With Florida being a no-fault state the likely hood that car insurance will increase is a given regardless of any change to your credit, driving history, or vehicles. Which means that carriers can increase your premium over the short term without having to wait. I prefer to only have to renew car insurance annually given the fact that more then likely I will attain to the same increase as done bi-annually. I chose to do business with Liberty Mutual based on several factors including overall premium price, but I also pay slightly more to make that price consistent for a whole year.
- Medical insurance does provide a benefit to the policy holder because they negotiate a price for the specified procedure ahead of time. Essentially economies of scale is at work within a health insurance company.
- It seems that Target and other retailers adjust their product line to the next occurring holiday as soon as one holiday ends. I understand it is a way for retailers to boost annual sales if they can capitalize on seducing unwary buyers into purchasing must have items in advance. Especially if the buyer did not know they needed the item in the first place.
- Imagine removing a jar of pickles from the refrigerator and the lid comes off causing the pickle jar to fall and shatter all over the floor. The unintended consequence occurred due to hurriedly putting away condiment items and which involved hurriedly screwing the lid on a fraction of the way.
- Cameras exist at certain intersections to self police individuals into not running red lights. A driver that runs a red-light could cause an accident which in turn increases the likelihood of unintended injury and an increase in insurance rates. See bullet #2
- The reason for saturation of the TV ad is condition a response from the viewer. For instance, after seeing Reba dressed as the Colonel I now notice KFC's located through out the county. Where as before I could not even tell you if we had any locations.
- The labels exist on garments to prove where it was manufactured, who is the licensed retailer of the product, and the size and care guidelines. Certain labeling is required by law.
- Imagine a world where you could make a reservation for some specified future time to eat at your favorite chain restaurant. Well most likely reason for this "perfect world" scenario is the mere fact that people don't always show up for reservations; therefore, the business would lose revenue.
- The product line for 2011 was most likely negotiated in advance of updated information, and the version of bluetooth applied to the GMC line was not the most up to date.
- Owning a pet is a responsibility. However, some individuals do not necessarily agree. For instance, in my neighborhood their are numerous individuals who do not pick up after their dog while on walks. Perhaps sometimes they don't see the dog has eliminated.
- Have you ever had trouble locating a specific item at the store. Such as you need infant Tylenol so you look in the medicine section, but the item is actually located in the baby section. Although on some occasions with enough inventory the store can stock in both places. I understand that shelf space if valuable and they need to stock high sales and high margin items carefully.
- Marketing increases awareness of products and services. Recently I saw an add for a new cell phone with a trade-in allowance deal. I almost fell victim to the wonderful marketing tactic.
- As a retailer an ultimate goal is to retain the customer. Customer retention can be accomplished through brand loyalty. The issue with brand loyalty is when the brand changes or disappears it is hard to find replacements on some items. The personal opportunity cost is greater than the product cost in most cases.
- Road construction is a necessary evil for several reasons. It helps keep the road in working order, it provides for greater access, and creates a safer operating environment. However, the construction process creates a negative effect on most users for the same reasons, in the short-term.
- Group Texts allow for multiple user to interact and possibly come to a consensus in real time without having to respond to multiple user individually.
- Most restaurants in the area are chain restaurants and not many chain restaurants target specifically an overall breakfast theme. Perhaps there is not a large profit margin for breakfast foods. More consumers tend to eat out dinner with drinks than breakfast.
- Many people use the restroom at popular destinations. Likely staff are unaware of the issue in the restroom until either someone tells them or they use it themselves.
- The meteorologist uses a myriad of information to determine the most probable outcome. Even the best prediction is at best only a guess.
- We live in a time of instant gratification. Which also leads to he who holds the most information is king. Therefore, all information is taken at face value and rarely ever fact checked for accuracy. Today's society operates under a FIFO production, first in-first out.
Reflection:
When I started my bug list I quickly thought of around eight items; however, just as Dr. Pryor pointed out the longer the list the harder it will become to finish. I also found it was difficult to be specific. I had several items that I would have liked to go into detail, but I do not project certain opinions in open forum. Overall, I am glad that I started early because of the length of time to uncover my bug items.
Dan, I related to so many of your "bugs," but also disagreed with a couple. I think your "whys" were very thorough. Like you, I'm hesitant to mention some of my closer-held opinions online, but I'm also opinionated and I know I'm probably going to end up spilling those opinions since these posts aren't content graded! I'm pretty excited about that. I can imagine the pickle jar thing happening to you, and then you being like "ohhhh yeah, this is going on the list!" I have a TON of issues with my car insurance going up all the time. I'm under 25 so no matter what I do, if I want good coverage my insurance for my one vehicle is over $200/month. The best advice I've found is to switch providers about once a year. I've had 3different ones in the last 4 years. It stinks, but so does being ripped off. I enjoyed reading your list!
