My Story Assignment 3A
CC0
First:
My story begins in the summer of 2001. I was working in the new construction industry with the install of irrigation systems. After a short time, I felt that I understood the industry well enough to start my own business. So I created an S Corporation and went to work. Over the next several months things started to fall into place, and I was almost at the point of leaving my current employment to venture out full-time on my own. Then came Tuesday, September 11. The construction industry in our area crashed nearly overnight. Also 9/11 sparked something in me that had remained dormant for quite sometime. After several months of barely scraping by, I applied for a government position. In the interim I took a job with a local irrigation contractor and shuddered my business for good. Nearly six months later, I received a phone call offering me the government job. The job was an opportunity to provide public service to our citizens. I accepted the position and have not thought much about entrepreneurship since.
Second:
I enrolled in ENT 3003 this summer as it is a requirement of the UF Business Administration Online Program. I hope to gain a better understanding of entrepreneurship. Who knows, I may decide to start a business when I retire from my current career.

Dan, it's awesome that you were able to follow your heart/convictions during that time when the world changed in a matter of minutes. I think there are some people who go through life constantly chasing one entrepreneurial dream after another... then there are some who are more cautious or opportunistic like you. You may once again find yourself in a position to create another businesses... ok, now I sound like a fortune cookie. But hopefully this class will help you identify OPPORTUNITIES- then, your own knowledge and gut feelings will tell you whether or not to pursue them.
ReplyDeleteHello Dan,
ReplyDeleteWow what an interesting entrepreneurship story, its amazing to read how for you had gotten with your business. To see that you have been through one of the realities of owning a business that we touched on in class, that not all businesses succeed. And that can be due to reasons which in your case is unexpected circumstances. To know that you did not give up, but found another purpose is inspiring. I agree who knows one day your entrepreneurship spirit may push you to another innovative venture.
