Possible Opportunities from the Tampa Bay Times
For this assignment, I reviewed local newspaper articles. Here is what I found.
1."Gas Prices May Hurt Summer Travel"
The article addresses the fact that crude oil prices have been on the rise. They also provide some statistics to how sharply prices have risen over a given period, which is the Memorial Day Weekend. According to their point of view, Gasbuddy.com predicts a decrease in overall travel due to the fuel increase; however, AAA rebuts that fact and essentially says there will be more travel this summer than in years past.
Everyone in the state of Florida could potentially be impacted if fuel prices do drive down travelers. In this state, we are a society of services. People travel to Florida for our beaches and theme parks, so our economy relies heavily on the tourism dollars. If travel decreases, so could our general revenue.
2. "Busy, But Not Enough"
The article talks about the ongoing boom of home building in the greater Tampa Bay area. According to the information, Hillsborough County is currently outpacing Pasco County with the amount of homes being built. However, the amount of building does not coincide with demand. We also learn that the median household income does not support the new median home price.
The problem discussed is one of supply and demand; however, I believe that two problems are present. For new construction demand we see that most out of state individuals would have a problem with acquiring a home. But for lower income families who already reside in the area, they are unable to find affordable housing in the current market. Which is also due to supply issues.
3. "RV Resort Loses Guy Harvey"
For several months now I have heard of the impending Guy Harvey resort that was slated to come to Pasco County. The article discusses the previously little known fact that the Guy Harvey corporation has withdrawn their association with the business. Also the writer does imply that the resort is still coming, but it will not be allowed to showcase and affiliation with the artist. With the apparent legal troubles that were showcased in the article, I am not very optimistic the resort will come to fruition.
The problem is a damper on eco-tourism in our area. If the resort does not move forward, the residents of Pasco County will lose on job creation and sales tax dollars.
4. "Seffner Woman Sues Experian"
A Tampa area woman is suing the credit conglomerate Experian after she alleges that Experian fraudulently linked her with several other Social Security numbers. According to the article the individual has sustained damage to her credit by the erroneous information. She also seeks to obtain monetary compensation for damages.
5. "Water, Sewer Cost to Much"
For my final article, I discovered an op-ed ranting about the lack of service and civility in dealing with fees charged for Pasco County Utilities. The author describes the issues she recently had with activating services and fees charged for the activation. The writer also suggest that some oversight may be warranted for this issue.

Dan, I bet Tampa Bay is trying to attract higher income populations with their new expensive homes, but that is really unfortunate and not helpful for locals and those with lower incomes. There is a need with those two groups, good point, but maybe that need just gets met slowly by people selling their used homes.
ReplyDeleteNone of my opportunities that I found in Gainesville overlapped with yours in Pasco County, surprisingly. The ones I found articles about were about things like homelessness and Walmart crime.
The home building in the Tampa bay area really stuck out to me. As someone that recently moved to the Tampa area for work. I can tell it is a developed market that is continuously growing. Through tech innovation or another type of industry or trades, people are moving here for work. Seems like a great time to move to the city.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who travels a lot during the summer months to visit family across Florida and has family visit from other states and countries, the gas prices opportunity is something I can relate too. I can see how that affects tourism and revenue, for example the prices for airport shuttles or other tourism transportation vehicles may increase and price is a big factor in vacation plans.
