Does anyone have a mirror? I need to see my reflection

For the second reading, I chose the book “Thinking Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman.
1)      The over all theme of the book was how we as humans make decisions.  According to the author, we have two different systems that are utilized or underutilized when we decide.  The systems are aptly named System 1 and System 2.  The writer discusses how each system is used, or when it is used.
2)      We learned about the process of making decisions with certainty, and with risk.  As an entrepreneur we will be making decisions involving risk.  Since there is no certainty in starting a new business or creating a new product.  The decision process will also be useful with trying to do market research to help avoid some common pitfalls of human psychology.
3)      The exercise I would design would be based on a decision test.  There were numerous examples throughout the book that were used while they were conducting their research.  For instance, one example asked people to read words and say aloud if the words were either upper or lower case, and then say aloud if the words were placed left or right of the center margin.  The words in the exercise consisted of; upper, lower, left, and right.  Which made it difficult to do using what was described as System 1 process.
4)      I don’t recall having an “aha” moment while reading the book.  I can say that I did not expect the content of the book to be so matter of fact a collection of short stories on scientific research.  The title is about thinking fast and slow.  I just thought it was a catchy title that really had nothing to do with the content, boy was I wrong.  I will keep the book to use as a reference as I move forward in life.  I did learn some interesting facts on how we make decisions, which could be useful in the future.

  1. Interesting read, seems like you got a lot out of this reading and was able to conceptualize a lot of the material and apply it in your day to day life. I like the system 1 and system 2 initiative. Like your ideas, I do not like forced discussions that we are "forced" to have, great thing about entrepreneurship is you can force your opinion to improve a business system or idea.

  2. Hey Dan, I enjoyed your reading reflection. I think researching how we make decisions as humans is extremely useful for us as entrepreneurs. If we can learn how people make purchasing decisions, then we can use that to help us with the marketing of our idea. Studying decisions can also help us,as entrepreneurs, evaluate the risk when pursing a new venture.

  3. Dan, wow, what a "Dad" title you put on this one, hahaha. It's pretty cool that you plan to keep the book as a reference guide to your life moving forward. It sounds confusing, the part about the word visualization, left, right, uppercase, etc. That's strange. My Myers-Briggs personality type is ESTP (the Entrepreneur) which means I'm on the riskier side of the spectrum. Maybe this book could help me manage my risks.... but nahhhh.... where's the fun in that!?! ;)
